The Steps of the Impossible

The Impossible will be solved layer by layer, and the algorithms are derived from those of the 3x3x3.

Step 1

The 1st Layer

When the layer is fully solved, your cube will look like this:

No special algorithm

The placement of the pieces should remain intuitive.

Here are the main steps:

The Centers

The Edges

The Corners

Step 1 bis

The Centers of the 2nd Layer

You must ensure that all centers are correctly oriented; if so, everything is fine.

Otherwise, you have one case for each incorrectly oriented center.

Place the centers to be oriented as shown opposite.

When all centers are correctly oriented, your cube will look like this:

Quarter turn clockwise

Step 2

Edges of the 2nd layer

When all edges have been processed, your cube will look like this:

Case a

The red/blue edge is on the 3rd layer to the right

The algorithm allows it to be placed on the 2nd layer.

Case b

The red/blue edge is on the 3rd layer opposite

The algorithm allows it to be placed on the 2nd layer.

Case c

The red/blue edge is placed on the 2nd layer and incorrectly oriented

The algorithm allows it to be moved down to the 3rd layer.

You can then apply the algorithm from case a.

Step 3.1

Orientation of the edges of the 3rd layer

When all the edges have been processed, your cube will look like this:

Case a

The already oriented edges are side by side

The algorithm will orient the Front/Right edges.

Case b

The edges already oriented are: opposite

This formula will orient the edges Left / Right.

Case c

No oriented edge

The algorithm will orient the edges Left / Back.

You can then apply the algorithm from case a.

Step 3.2

Placement of the edges of the 3rd layer

When all the edges have been processed, your cube will look like this:

Case a

The edges already placed are: side by side

The algorithm will place the edges Left / Front.

Case b

The edges already placed are: opposites

This formula will position the Front/Back edges.

You can then apply the algorithm from case a.

Step 4

The corners of the 3rd layer

When all the corners have been processed, your cube will look like this:

Positioning the corners

The algorithm will swap the corners (except the one in front of you on the right) clockwise.

Depending on your setup, you should apply the algorithm a maximum of 2 times!

The orientation of the corners can vary. What matters is the placement.

(The 3 colors of each corner must correspond to the 3 theoretical faces of the corner)

Orienting the corners

The algorithm will allow you to orient the two rightmost corners upwards.

Depending on your setup, you should apply the algorithm a maximum of two times!

Remember to orient your cube correctly to avoid performing the algorithm more than necessary, meaning not necessarily the third layer at the top.

Your impossible is solved.
